John is survived by his devoted wife, Darlene, his children John Janson, Heidi Babkirk, Heather Gutteridge, Gary Gutteridge, and Hollie Johnson, as well as his cherished grandchildren Alexandria, Dustin, John, Hannah, Hailey, Ellie, Lila, Kyle and Scott. He also leaves behind great-grandchildren Odessa, Alistair, Odin, and Sihtrick. He was preceded in death by his parents, his sister Linda, and his great-grandson Draco. John dedicated 22 years of his life to serving in the U.S. Army, proudly wearing the uniform and earning numerous decorations, badges, and ribbons throughout his career. A Vietnam veteran, he honored the values of service and sacrifice, holding his role as a soldier close to his heart. Following his military retirement, John pursued higher education, earning a bachelor’s degree in Psychology from St. Martin’s College in 1992. He spent nearly 30 years as a Vocational Rehabilitation Counselor, helping injured workers rebuild their careers and futures. He retired at 75 from Washington State Labor and Industries as a Vocational Service Specialist due to illness. Beyond his professional achievements, John will be remembered for his sharp wit, compassionate nature, and deep love for his family. He found joy in watching football and baseball, tending to his garden, golfing, fishing, woodworking and his family. An avid reader, John read 10 to 15 books a month, but his happiest moments were those spent with his wife of 32 years. John’s legacy of love, service, and wisdom will live on in the hearts of all who knew him. He will be laid to rest at the National Military Cemetery in Tahoma at a later date.
