In 1989, my wife and I started a store on University Ave. in Palo Alto, CA called Whales & Tales. We sold nature related gifts and art including a number of Walt's bronze sculptures. The store was in an old building and had a bronze door knob. We asked Walt if he could convert it into a whale tail and he was willing to try. We sent him the doorknob assembly and he gave us back a beautiful bronze door knob set with a whale tail on either side of the door. So every time a customer entered or left the store they were touching one of Walt's whale tails. We polished it every day and it always looked beautiful. Although the store closed in 1995, we took the door knob assembly with us and still have it today. We will always remember Walt fondly.
