Obituary of Shirley Ruth Landis

Shirley Landis peacefully passed away while surrounded by family on December 23, 2020 at her home in Shelton, Washington. Shirley Ruth Rohrbaugh Landis was born Angelina Ruth Miller to Martin and Ethel Miller in IA. Her name was later changed by her grandfather to Shirley after Shirley Temple. She was the third of five children. Shirley gave her life to Christ at the age of fifteen and was baptized at the Church of Christ in Cherokee, IA. She attended school in Marcus and Cherokee, graduating in 1952 from Wilson High School. Shirley was united in marriage to Richard “Swede” Rohrbaugh in 1953. When Swede first saw Shirley at the skating rink, he said that she was the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. To this marriage, five daughters were born. They raised their family on a farm in Peterson, IA that always seemed to hold the aroma of freshly baked bread. In 1992, Shirley and Swede relocated to Shelton, WA to spend their retirement years together at Deer Creek until Swede's passing in 1995. Shirley met and later married Charles Landis in 2000. They loved to camp in their RV and travel to Hawaii and Mexico until Chuck’s passing in 2013. A beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother; she was devoted and active in all of our lives. A creative woman of boundless energy, her hands were always busy. She was an accomplished oil painting artist, and liked to knit, crochet, quilt, and make aprons. Shirley loved a competitive game of Scrabble, cards, a challenging crossword puzzle, dancing, and sharing Mary Kay. She enjoyed her colorful flowers, secret garden, and salmon coming up the creek. She enjoyed attending her families sporting events and supported their academic achievements. She was a warm and generous hostess that brought family and friends together for gatherings. She was known for her world’s best apple pie with cheese, potato salad and loved to share Blue Bunny ice cream, Cheetos and anything covered in chocolate. Her kind spirit, sense of humor and humble heart were treasured by all who met her and will be missed by all the lives she touched. Shirley’s life was guided by her strong Christian faith. She was a member of the Church of Christ and Lamplighters in Sutherland, IA, Shelton Christian Church in Shelton, WA, (her mother was a charter member) and Hood Canal Community Church in Hoodsport, WA. She was a member of the DAR, Senior Center, and Red Hats. Shirley is rejoicing in Heaven with her loved ones and reunited with her infant daughter, Gloria Jean. Left to cherish her memory are her daughters: Barbara Worrell, Valerie (David) Skidmore, Karen (Eddie) Schultz, Lori Rohrbaugh; ten grandchildren; twenty great-grandchildren and an extended family of relatives and friends. “Family” Celebration of Life will be at Hood Canal Community Church in Hoodsport.
